MODERN EUROPEAN SPLENDOR

Hendel Homes worked closely with James McNeal Architecture to create this Modern European custom luxury home in the Orono neighborhood just west of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The home features subtle Tudor influences such as a steep roofline, crushed limestone stucco in a custom China white folor, and soffit fascia trim painted in a contrasting color called Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black.

Situated on a large wooded lot that offered views of the nearby tributaries that feed into Lake Minnetonka, we built the home to capture the long vistas with expansive banks of black metal windows from Marvin Modern Line and sliding glass pocket doors that blend indoor and outdoor living.

The luxury home features an open floor plan with varying ceiling heights and room volume that changes from space to space as you move through the home, creating a sense of stately grandeur in some rooms and quiet privacy in others. Doorways throughout the home are arched

Many of the rooms have separate entrances to patios and balconies that allow the homeowners to soak in the sights and sounds of native animal and plant life.

Several of the chandeliers throughout the home are from Hudson Valley Lighting Group, with airy designs that fill the space in the vaulted ceiling in the great room and over the dining room table. The chandelier in the stair hall is by Il Pezzo and was imported from Italy.

With interior design, furnishings, and styling by Vivid Home, the center of this home is the kitchen, where richly veined quartzite covers a waterfall island that anchors the space. A black stainless Viking refrigerator and a 48” dual fuel Viking range rests beneath a custom metal hood. The kitchen cabinets are rift-cut white oak with a natural stain, with brass tone drawer pulls and hardware from Rocky Mountain Hardware. The kitchen sink is by Kohler, and the brass toned gooseneck pull down spray faucet is by Waterworks.

Behind the kitchen is a scullery working kitchen with black oak cabinets and a secondary sink and Viking french door oven, and a bank of sliding pass-through windows that lead to an outdoor bar top and casual seating area. The spacious walk-in pantry also features black oak cabinetry with contrasting brass hardware, and a Jenn-Air Speed Oven.

Most of the furniture throughout the home is custom, including an oversized navy velvet uoholstered sectional sofa in the great room adjacent to the kitchen. A custom wood burning fireplace with a limestone surround and cast iron fireballs add a modern touch of whimsy to the room. Overhead, white oak beams and trusses bring in a rustic element of nature.

The howeowners have a collection of wine that is stored and displayed in a custom-built climate controlled wine room that features backlit Sicis volcanic gem glass imported from Italy.

The main powder room for guests has a custom oversized sink made with teal, white, and gray Amazonite quartzite. In the boldly designed laundry area, cabinets are painted in a bright blush color, with Gucci wallpaper in a vibrant tiger print.

An owner’s suite features a floor-to-ceiling upholstered headboard, luxury linens, and a brass pendant round chandelier with oblong Edison bulbs that can face inward or stand upright. The centerpiece of the owner’s bathroom is a brass and nickel standalone bathtub handmade in England by Catchpole and Rye, black slab marble with brass hardware in the walk-in shower, and a black and white carrera marble floor in a diamond pattern. His-and-her walk-in closets feature separate dressing areas — one with feminine wallpaper inspired by luxury fashion brands, and the other black stained oak with an abstract framed Picasso style print.

An upstairs alcove with natural tone wood paneling houses dual home offices separated by a glass door and glass walls, with custom built-in bookshelves surrounding a window that floods the space with light.

The lower garage was designed to house the homeowner’s Porsche, with a black-on-gray custom luxury “auto suite” that includes maintenance space, storage for high-end tools, and a built-in bar.

Outdoors, a central terrace entertainment area is anchored by a large gathering table, an outdoor grill, pizza oven, and bar. A swimming pool is flanked by a row of lounge chairs on one side and a pool house on the other side, replete with a full kitchen and bathroom.
